Ricardo Amarante began  his dance training in his native Brazil and went on to complete his studies on scholarship at the National Ballet School of Cuba. He completed his training in London at English National Ballet School where he also performed with ENB. The following year, he worked with the prestigious Paris Opera Ballet and in 1999 joined the Jeune Ballet de France touring around the world.

In 2000, Ricardo joined the Royal Ballet of Flanders. He was promoted to demi soloist in 2003, and soloist in 2008 and there performed in a range of works: Giselle, The Three Musketeers, Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Theme and Variations, Raymonda, Onegin, as well as ballets by Christopher d’Amboise, William Forsythe, Jorma Elo, Jiri Kylian and Nicolo Fonte, among others.

Ricardo began developing his interest in choreography in Antwerp For the Royal Ballet Flanders he created numerous works including A Fuego Lento, Aquarela, Sonho Angelical, Train of Thoughts, Lune' air, Love Fear Loss, Rondo Capriccioso and A Soulful Touch. The critical and public success of Love Fear Loss has led to invitations for the work to be performed at galas around Europe and in Japan.

He restaged Sonho Angelical for Ballet Dortmund in Germany in 2011 and A Fuego Lento for the Royal Ballet School of Antwerp in 2013. The following year he returned to the School to create Between Them

In March 2014, Ricardo was invited to participate in the New York City Ballet’s Choreographic Institute, where he created Essential Shift with a specially composed score by Sayo Kosugi. That same year, he was the commissioned choreographer for the Genee International Ballet Competition by the Royal Academy of Dance held in Antwerp.

In 2015, Royal Ballet Flanders presented the world premiere of In Flanders Fields with music composed by Sayo Kosugi. Performed to critical and audience acclaim with the Financial Times of London noting, ‘His movement is proudly neoclassical... and he marshals his 24 dancers with confidence in a series of tableaux.’ In July, Ricardo created a new work for English National Ballet School and in September, Royal Ballet Flanders presented the world premiere of Quatro a Quatro in Antwerp.

Ricardo left the Royal Ballet of Flanders to become Resident Choreographer & Artistic Associate of the Astana Ballet in Kazakhstan. His works there include, Gaia, Touch of Illusion, received its world premiere in September, 2017 and a new full-evening Giselle in 2018.

In 2016, Ricardo was one of the finalists of the Concours de Jeunes Choreographes jointly produced by Malandain Ballet Biarritz, Toulouse Ballet and Bordeaux National Opera Ballet. His creation received its world premiere at the Concours on 24th April in Biarritz and he was awarded the Prix Fondation de Danse for Love, Fear, Loss.

In September, 2018, Ricardo created a new work, The Premiere, for Atlanta Ballet in Georgia, USA and in March, 2019, presented the world premiere of Silent Voices for Astana Ballet.

More recently, Ricardo has staged Love Fear Loss for Atlanta Ballet and Ballet Idaho in the USA, The Compania Nacional de Danza in Madrid, Spain and for The Cuban National Ballet in Havana. He also staged Touch of Illusion for Stoyanov Kiev Ballet in the Ukraine.

Projects in 2022/23 included his own productions of Firebird and Scheherazade which premiered in March for Vanemuine Ballet in Estonia and staging three of his works for Compania Colombiana de Ballet in Cali, Colombia in August.

In February 2024, Miami City Ballet presented the world premiere of Ricardo's Delight designed by Rene Salazar and in May, Ballet Idaho unveiled his newest creation of Carmen. He has also recently staged Love Fear Loss for Complexions Dance Company in New York City and worked with the Ballet of Rio de Janeiro.
