Paolo Mangiola is a dancer, choreographer and dance educator based between Rome and London.
Interested in the concept of contemporaneity, Paolo looks at choreography as a system of instructions applicable to different contexts. He explores with his work the border between dance and ordinary movement, drawing inspiration from various artistic sources such as cinema, theatre, visual art, street culture, new trends, web and emerging movements.
During his career as a professional dancer he has danced for companies such as Aterballetto, Tanzthatre Nuernberg, WM|RD and Cullberg Ballet where he performed works of Mauro Bigonzetti, Jacopo Godani, Wayne McGregor, Rui Horta, Daniela Kruz, Stejn Cellis, Jorma Elo and Deborah Hay.
Alongside his work as a dancer he decided at a young age to devote himself to the exploration of his artistic practice and during this period Wayne McGregor encourages him to become an integral part of the artistic creations, enhancing his choreographic talent and artistic growth.
His choreographic works have been performed in London at The Place, Sadler's Wells and the Linbury Studio - Covent Garden, as well as in contemporary art galleries and urban spaces in Rome, Milan, Norway and Germany.
He refined his studies at The Place, London, achieving in 2015 a Master in choreography.
His recent work released by the digital platform of culture Nowness has soon reached thousands of views becoming quickly a viral success on the net.
Currently, he is curating the contemporary dance department at the Scuola del Balletto di Roma. He is a guest teacher of choreography and dance history at the University of Malta and a full time teacher of choreography at English National Ballet School, London.
In November 2014 he was appointed associate choreographer at Balletto di Roma, the contemporary dance company in Rome, currently under the direction of Roberto Casarotto.
In Summer 2017, Paolo was appointed Artistic Director of ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble, the National Dance Company of Malta. Paolo's first full-evening production for the company, Voyager, received its world premiere in Valletta in November, 2018. In May 2019, he created Song of the Earth for the Ballet of Szczecin Opera in Poland which in 2020 won Poland's the Kiepura Prize for set designers Martyna Kander and Julia Skrzynecka.
Paolo continues to investigate the way in which dance, as a movement practice and as an art form, develops and changes through an on going dialogue with contemporary discourses in the context of our interconnected world.
