'the highlight of the programme though is undoubtedly the staggeringly beautiful SAM... Agudo's deeply satisfying reutal celebration is performed with subtlety and skill by Area Jeune Ballet... the movement is elegant and rhythmic; a blur of limbs becomes a pulsing flight as first one, then another break free.' Neil Mudd, The Culture Vulture, April, 2019

'Ki is truly one of the most mesmerising, visceral pieces of dance you might ever hope to see.' - Carlos Pons Guerra, Dance Europe Magazine

'At once abstract and triumphalist, Ki shows a man banishing his demons and imposing his will on the space around him.'

Luke Jennings, The Observer

'An eclectic mix of influences that is bearing fruit in the style of their own work. The result 4m2 is a hybrid physical theatre.'

Keith Watson, The Metro

Jose Agudo

Jose's video reel is here and forthcoming performances here.

Jose started his career in Andalusia where he began performing as a Flamenco dancer. Slowly the world of contemporary dance became more visible as he worked throughout Europe performing with Charleroi/Danses, Ballet de Marseille, T.R.A.S.H, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance and Akram Khan Company.

As a rehearsal director and assistant choreographer Jose has worked on several creations for Akram Khan Company, including DESH, iTMOi, TOROBAKA, Until the Lions, Chotto Desh, London 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, and Sylvie Guillem’s farewell tour, Life in Progress.

From 2016 to 2018 Jose was Associate Artist with Zfin Malta Dance Ensemble.

In 2011, Jose started studying Kathak under Akram’s guidance. Finding many parallels between this training and his early studies of Flamenco, Jose reconnected with his roots and began to explore traditional forms in a contemporary context. The result has been 3 new creations, Paradiso focused on Indian dance; Silk Road with Bharatanatyam artist Mavin Khoo; and Carmen with its strong influences from the Mediterranean and Flamenco for Zfin Malta Dance Ensemble.

Jose’s independent choreographic commissions also include, Ki for Phoenix Dance Theatre and English National Ballet School; Selah and Carmen for ZfinMalta Dance Ensemble; A Thousand Shepherds for ACE Dance and Music, later restaged for Cape Dance Company; Arctic for LCDS; and Regnum for Festival International de Music y Danza de Granada, among several other creations.

During 2018 Jose created SAM for Area Jeune Ballet (Switzerland) and  a new work for Sweden's Norrdans. He also premiered his first short film Selah with co-director Matthew Beckett, and toured the UK and internationally in his full evening Silk Road.

In 2019, Jose is creating a new work for the students of English National Ballet School as well as a work for BODHI, the international touring company of SEAD (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance) in Austria.
