Jonas Vlerick was born in Brugge, Belgium in 1985. He studied at the Royal Ballet School in Antwerp, Belgium. After completing a  summer university course with Le Ballet des Jeunes d'Europe, he was noticed by Robert Denvers, artistic director of the Royal Ballet of Flanders who invited him to join the company in 2003.  Jonas remains a dancer with the company. He has worked there under subsequent direction of Kathryn Bennetts, Assis Carreiro and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.

 

Jonas has danced as a soloist in works by distinguished choreographers such as: Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Nicolo Fonte,  Elo Jorma, Jacopo Godani, Marcia Haydee, Edward Clug, Christian Spuck and George Balanchine.

 

As a choreographer, he  has created several ballets for the production Coupe Maison/Choreo Lab of the Royal Ballet of Flanders. These include: Living waters, Inner moment, Unforeseen hope, 0², Theropoda, The bigger the front, the bigger the back and Unanswered.  In 2015, he created Allied Nodes.

 

At the young age of 22, Jonas was  selected to take part in  "Uncontainable" a project from The Royal Ballet of Flanders which gave him an opportunity to make his first full length ballet Missing pieces for a mixed program.

 

In 2013, he was selected to participate in the third Choreographic LAB of DanceEast in England, led by Jonathan Lunn. There he had the chance to develop further as a choreographer in a very intense program.

 

In 2014/15, Jonas  made two new creations for the Royal Ballet School in Antwerp and another for the Theatre de Meervaart in Amsterdam. A piece by him will be shown at the Dutch Embassy in Macedonia.

 

In October 2015 he participated in the Valentina Kozlova International Ballet Competition (VKIBC). There he won a gold medal dancing his own piece and a silver medal for choreography. In April, 2016, he took part in the VKIBC finals in New York City where he received a bronze medal in the Contemporary Duet category.

 

In 2017, he staged Social Instinct for Delattre Dance in Mainz, Germany and created Solar Industries for Royal Ballet Flanders. He also created a new hour-long children's work,  When no one is watching, for Royal Ballet Flanders in 2017 which returns to the repertoire in February, 2019.

In 2020/21, Jonas is creating a new work, Wild Hearts for Germany's Oldenburg Ballet.
