Born in London and based in Zurich, Switzerland, Ihsan trained at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance and began his professional career at the age of 17, joining Matthew Bourne's Adventures in Motion Pictures.
He went on to perform with Ballett Theater Munich (Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz) and Introdans in The Netherlands. In 2007, Ihsan moved to Switzerland to perform with Bern Ballet and the Tanz Luzerner Theater. During this period, he originated roles in creations by Wayne McGregor, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, Matthew Bourne, Patrick Delcroix, Stijn Celis, Cayetano Soto, Felix Landerer, Guilherme Bothello and worked with choreographers Mats Ek, Jiri Kylián, Sol Leon / Paul Lightfoot, Hans van Manen and William Forsythe, among others.
In 2010 Sarah Slipper invited Ihsan to Portland, Oregon, USA to create State of Matter for North West Dance Project. The piece went on to win both the 2012 Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest prize and the Audience Choice Award at the 25th International Competition for Choreographers Hannover. In 2015 Ihsan was appointed Resident Choreographer for NW Dance Project. His sixth original work for NW Dance Project, Carmen, received Dance Magazine's 2017 Readers' Choice Award for Best Ballet.
In 2015 Ihsan was appointed Resident Choreographer for NWDP and continues in this position today. He is also the former Artistic Director of the Dance Art Studio Ballettschule Luzern.
Rustem was the 2014 recipient of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago's International Commissioning Project and a featured choreographer for Russia's TV show 'The Bolshoi Ballet'.
Ihsan has created works for NW Dance Project, National Ballet of Chile, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago 2, Istanbul State Ballet MDT, Tanz Luzerner Theater, Kazan State Opera and Ballet, Whim W'Him Seattle, Ballet Regensburg, Ballet Koblenz, Krasnoyarsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre, Würzburg Ballett, Salt Contemporary Dance Company, National Youth Dance Company, Aksanat Istanbul, Cinevox Junior Company, Codarts, Zurich HdK and the Palucca Schule Dresden.
He created the internationally acclaimed, Dance Me to music by Leonard Cohen for Les Ballets Jazz de Montreal which had its world premiere in Montreal in December, 2017 and is now touring the globe. In October 2018, he created Voces for Ballet Nacional Chileno in Santiago de Chile.
Nederlands Dans Theater recently selected Ihsan as one of their Upcoming Choreographers and he created A Tale of Impermanence which was premiered on 20th June, 2019 by NDT2 at Korzo in The Hague.
In January, 2020, Ihsan created Death and the Maiden for Ballet Moscow in Russia and in the coming season, he was due to premiere his version of The Rite of Spring in April for NW Dance Project but COVID-19 meant it was unable to go ahead.
